DC Bike Tours Night: Monuments lit and less crowded
Glide through glowing monuments on a cool, crowd-free evening bike ride
You ride past nine major memorials over three hours on a guided bike tour, moving slowly enough to absorb what your guide is explaining but fast enough to cover real ground. The bike, helmet, lights and vest are all included, and the pace suits casual exercisers—five miles is manageable even if you haven't been on a bike in years. You're back by the time the city really cools down.

The Experience
The city is still warm when you roll out from Unlimited Biking at 701 D Street NW, but the light has already started to shift. Your guide points out the Washington Monument first—notice the two colors of stone running up its shaft, a visible seam where construction stopped and restarted over decades. You're on a bike, moving slowly enough to actually see these details, fast enough that you're not standing in a crowd of a thousand other people trying to get the same photo. The air is cooler now. The monuments cast different shadows.
The route covers about five miles over three hours, which means you're stopping more than you're pedaling. You ride past the south side of the White House (no entry, but the guide fills in the gaps), then move into the memorial zone where the real work of the tour happens. At the WWII Memorial, your guide explains why it was dedicated ahead of schedule—the kind of detail you'd miss on your own. You walk your bike through the four rooms of the FDR Memorial, each one representing a different term, and learn the symbolism baked into the design. There's a bronze statue of FDR's dog, Fala, and people do rub its ears for luck, even on a guided tour.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial gets two stops. First you hear about the women's memorial and the design choices that made the Wall so different from every other monument in the city. Then you walk through it yourself, slowly, with the guide's context still fresh. The Korean War Veterans Memorial comes next—the one people call the Forgotten War, and the guide explains what you'd actually miss if you wandered in alone. You ride around the Tidal Basin from the MLK Memorial toward the FDR, and at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial (your last stop), the guide points out why the trees are cleared on one side: so Jefferson can keep a constant eye on the White House. It's the kind of thing that makes you look at the whole layout differently.
Bikes come fitted with headlights and reflective vests for safety, and helmets are mandatory. If you're bringing kids, trailer carriages are available for younger riders who can hold up their head and wear a helmet. Check-in is 15 minutes before departure at the shop, and tours run on time—late arrivals can't be guaranteed a spot. The tour doesn't happen if weather makes riding dangerous, but most evenings in DC work fine for this pace.
What’s included
- Your tour includes use of a bicycle fitted to your size, a mandatory helmet, a reflective safety vest, bike headlights, and a fully guided three-hour experience led by a guide who knows the history and design details of each memorial.

- You'll cover roughly five miles, stopping at nine major monuments and memorials across the city.
