The Experience

We were already halfway down the National Mall when our guide, Marcus, stopped under a patch of shade and asked if anyone else could smell the grass after last night’s rain. I hadn’t noticed until then — it was subtle, but there. He pointed out how the Lincoln Memorial lines up perfectly with the Capitol, which honestly I’d never realized even after seeing it in movies. There were only six of us, so it felt more like wandering with friends than a typical tour group. Someone’s phone buzzed and Marcus just grinned, “That’s probably Lincoln texting you.”

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial caught me off guard. The black stone was cooler than I expected when I touched it, and people left little flags or notes tucked along the edge. The World War II Memorial was crowded but somehow peaceful — fountains splashing, kids running around while older folks just sat quietly on benches. When we finally reached the Washington Monument, Marcus handed us our tickets for the self-guided part and said he’d wait outside if anyone had questions later. Going up alone was strange after being with everyone all morning; looking out over DC from that height made everything below seem smaller and quieter than I imagined.
