Step-by-step itinerary

Explore top art museums in DC

  • Start at Unscripted Guided Tours DC Welcome Center
  • Tour National Gallery of Art highlights
  • Visit American Presidents collection
  • See iconic American artworks

The Experience

The National Gallery of Art holds over 3,000 works. Without a guide, you'd spend a week just glancing at each one for ten seconds. Instead, your guide cuts through the labyrinth and lands you in front of the pieces that define the collection: the only Da Vinci in the Western Hemisphere, sculptures by Degas and Rodin, works by Monet, Vermeer, Georgia O'Keeffe, Picasso, Whistler, Dali and Andy Warhol. You move through the galleries with someone who knows where these works hide among the maze of rooms, so you see what matters instead of what's closest to the entrance.

From there you walk to the National Portrait Gallery and the American Art museums, where the "America's Presidents" exhibit lines the walls—portraits of leaders who shaped the nation, painted in the same halls where President Lincoln celebrated his second inauguration. You'll see the iconic portraits found on American currency and discover how American artists used unconventional materials and styles to capture their subjects. The guide points out the stories behind the pieces and the techniques that make them stand out.

You start at the Unscripted Guided Tours DC Welcome Center, where you can charge your phone, refill your water bottle and get your bearings before the tour begins. The guide gives an introduction there, then leads you into the galleries. Rain ponchos and cold wet towels are included, along with a DC city map to orient yourself afterward. The whole tour takes three hours.

Top questions

What's actually in the National Gallery of Art that makes it worth three hours?

The National Gallery holds Renaissance masterworks by Raphael and the only Da Vinci painting in the Western Hemisphere, plus modern works by Monet, Vermeer, Picasso, Dali and Andy Warhol. Your guide takes you directly to these pieces instead of leaving you to find them in a building with over 3,000 works.

Do I see the presidential portraits on this tour?

Yes. The National Portrait Gallery's "America's Presidents" collection is the second part of the tour, featuring portraits of leaders who shaped the nation, including works displayed in the halls where President Lincoln celebrated his second inauguration.

How long does the tour take and what's included?

The tour runs three hours and includes an English-speaking guide, bottled water, rain ponchos, cold wet towels and a DC city map. You start at the Unscripted Welcome Center, where you can charge your phone before the tour begins.

Can I book this as a private tour or do I go in a group?

You can choose between a small group tour with a maximum of eight people or a private tour with your own guide. Both follow the same route through the National Gallery, Portrait Gallery and American Art museums.

Is this tour accessible if I use a wheelchair or have mobility concerns?

Yes. All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, and the tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and service animals are allowed.
