itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore DC neighborhoods with food and drinks

  • Learn about DC's founding and communities
  • Enjoy happy hour drink and seafood slider
  • Discover El Salvadorian community history
  • Have happy hour drink and savory pupusa
  • Explore Ethiopian cultural history in DC
  • Share communal beef and veggie platter
  • Taste sweet potato pie on U Street
  • Enjoy nightcap on rooftop deck

I think the first real moment was when our guide—Jamal—waved at someone outside the Salvadoran place in Adams Morgan like they were old friends. He joked he’s eaten more pupusas than anyone should admit. The place smelled like grilled corn and something a little tangy—maybe curtido? I tried to say “pupusa” right and got a laugh from the woman behind the counter. She handed me one that was still steaming, and honestly, I burned my tongue because I couldn’t wait. It was worth it.

We’d started in Dupont Circle earlier, walking past embassies with flags I didn’t recognize. The seafood slider stop surprised me—fancy but not fussy—and someone in our group asked about the history of the neighborhood. Jamal told us about how DC used to be swampy (literally) and why so many different communities ended up here. There’s something about eating outside on a busy street while people walk dogs or argue over parking that just feels like you’re part of it for a second.

The Ethiopian spot was next-level—communal platters piled with spicy beef and veggies, everyone using their hands (well, injera). The spices kind of lingered on my fingers after. We shared drinks and stories; I learned more about U Street’s music history than I ever did in school. At one point it started to drizzle but nobody cared—we just ducked under an awning with sweet potato pie slices balanced on paper plates.

The last stop was this rooftop deck with a view over DC that made me quiet for a minute. There were lights flickering below and you could hear bits of music floating up from somewhere down the block. I still think about that view sometimes—it felt like we’d seen so many versions of the city in just one evening, all through what we ate together.
