Small group sailing from Waikiki to Magic Island at golden hour

You’ll feel the ocean breeze as you sail from Honolulu with just a handful of fellow travelers, watching Waikiki and Diamond Head shift colors at sunset. With snacks and soft drinks included—and a local captain steering—the evening feels easy and real. It’s less about perfect photos and more about letting go for an hour or two.

Step-by-step itinerary

Waikiki sunset sailing experience

  • Board small sailboat The Universe
  • Sail towards Diamond Head
  • Watch sunset over Pacific Ocean
  • View Waikiki shoreline and city skyline
  • See ALA Moana beach park and Magic Island
  • Observe Hawaiian Hilton village

The Experience

I’ll be honest, I almost skipped this Waikiki sunset sailing tour because I thought it would be another crowded boat trip—should’ve known better. There were just six of us, plus Captain Keola (who’s got the driest sense of humor I’ve heard in a while). The boat’s called The Universe, which sounds dramatic but feels homey once you’re on board. You can smell the salt before you even leave the dock near Ala Moana, and there’s this low hum from the city behind you that fades out as soon as we hit open water.

We drifted past Waikiki Beach, all those hotels glowing pinkish in the last light. Someone pointed out Diamond Head—Le’ahi, Keola said—and he told us how locals read the clouds above it for weather. Never knew that. There was a breeze but not enough to make you cold; just enough to ruffle your shirt and mess up my hair (which I gave up on fixing). The stereo played some old Hawaiian tunes—soft enough that you could still hear waves slapping against the hull. At one point I caught a whiff of sunscreen and chips mixed together, which is somehow exactly what summer should smell like.

I tried to take a photo of Magic Island but honestly, none of them did it justice. The sun dipped right behind Diamond Head and everything went gold for maybe two minutes—then blue again, quick as that. We had cold drinks and crackers (nothing fancy), and someone started laughing about how their phone battery died just before sunset. No one seemed to mind. That was kind of the whole mood: nothing rushed or staged or loud.

What’s included

Your evening includes sailing with just five other guests plus Captain Keola on The Universe sailboat from Honolulu’s Ala Moana area. You’ll have cold soft drinks, juices, chips and crackers on board, music playing softly through stereo speakers, and access to restrooms below deck throughout your Waikiki sunset cruise.
