Ride through acres of tea bushes and watch seedlings take root in the greenhouse

A trolley tour on Wadmalaw Island near Charleston takes 35–40 minutes through the only tea garden in North America, with a live English-speaking guide and the founder's recorded narration. The route passes hundreds of thousands of tea bushes across multiple acres, then stops at the greenhouse where you step off to see how new tea plants are propagated. Service animals are welcome, and infants can sit on an adult's lap or use a specialized seat.

Step-by-step itinerary

Trolley tour of Charleston Tea Garden

  • Arrive at Charleston Tea Garden
  • Ride trolley through tea bushes
  • Listen to guide and founder narration
  • Stop at greenhouse to see tea bushes

The Experience

The trolley departs from the Charleston Tea Garden on Wadmalaw Island and rolls through row after row of tea bushes—the scale is what stays with you, acre after acre stretching across the property. Your guide narrates the ride live, explaining how the plants grow and what goes into tea production, and partway through, the founder Bill Hall's voice comes through the sound system with additional detail about the operation. The whole loop takes 35–40 minutes, which is enough time to see the scope of the garden without the day becoming a single stop.

The trolley makes one stop at the greenhouse, where everyone gets off to walk through and see the seedlings and propagation setup up close. This is where the next generation of tea plants begins, and it's the part of the tour that moves beyond the view from the trolley seat. After the greenhouse, you board again and head back to the starting point.
