Climb a 450-foot canyon wall on the only Italian-style via ferrata in the US

Shorty Town via ferrata is a guided climbing activity near Zion National Park where you ascend a 450-foot canyon wall using fixed anchors, cables and rungs. The day starts with a backcountry drive and a hike to a practice wall, where you spend 60 to 90 minutes learning gear operation and climbing two training routes before attempting the main wall at Eye of the Needle. A professional guide leads the whole sequence and the group stays small.

The experience

What makes via ferrata different from rock climbing is that the route is already fixed to the rock. You clip into cables and anchors bolted into the wall, so the technical skill required is minimal. Shorty Town sits in a remote area outside Zion, which means you'll rarely see anyone outside your group. The day begins with a 2.5-mile drive on backcountry roads to a remote cabin, then a hike along a flowing-water canyon on an adventure trail with chains and moki steps. This approach takes you to the practice wall, a 75-foot climb where you'll spend the first hour or more learning the 10 basic rules of gear operation and practicing safe climbing on two different routes.

Once you've demonstrated safe gear handling on the practice wall, it's a short walk to the rim of Eye of the Needle. From there, you clip in and get lowered to a platform where Shorty Town begins: a 450-foot ascent up the canyon wall. The climb involves 500 feet of elevation change over half a mile to and from the rim, so a reasonable level of physical fitness matters. Some participants choose to hike and complete the practice wall, then observe from the balcony rather than attempt the main wall. That option is always available if you want to try the experience without committing to the height.

Your guide is professionally accredited and trained by certified educators to introduce via ferrata safely, whether you've climbed before or this is your first time. Transportation from the meeting point to the backcountry location, helmet, harness, technical safety equipment and gloves are all included. The whole day runs about six hours.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the difference between via ferrata and rock climbing?

Via ferrata uses fixed cables, anchors and rungs bolted into the rock, so you clip in and follow an established route rather than finding your own path. This means you need far less technical climbing skill than traditional rock climbing, making it accessible to first-timers who are physically fit.

Can I do this if I've never climbed before?

Yes. The guides are trained to introduce via ferrata to first-timers, and the practice wall gives you 60 to 90 minutes to learn gear operation and build confidence on two training routes before you attempt the 450-foot main wall. You must be able to learn and follow the 10 basic rules of gear operation and demonstrate safe handling on the practice wall before moving to the bigger climb.

What happens if I don't want to climb the main wall at Eye of the Needle?

You can complete the practice wall and the hike, then observe your group from the balcony at the rim instead of descending and climbing the 450-foot canyon wall. This option is always available if you want to experience the day without committing to the height or the main climb.

How remote is Shorty Town?

It's located in a remote area outside Zion National Park, and the operator limits visitor numbers so you'll rarely see anyone outside your trip group. The day starts with a 2.5-mile drive on backcountry roads to reach the trailhead, then a hike along a flowing-water canyon to the practice wall.

What views will I see?

You'll see Oak Creek Canyon and Eye of the Needle's waterfall from the rim and during the climb: sights most visitors to the area never reach. The canyon wall itself frames the whole experience as you climb the 450-foot Shorty Town route.
