The experience
You arrive at the Upper Kenai River with a fishing license in hand and board a 20-foot custom drift boat with your guide, Mike Adams, a seasoned local instructor. The boat drifts the river's most productive stretches (water the operator holds rare permits to fish exclusively) passing between the peaks of the Kenai Mountains. The river here sits inside the Chugach National Forest and the upper Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, where wildlife sightings are common as you work the water.
The day splits between drifting and wading. From the boat you cast fly, spin or bait gear depending on conditions and what's running. The operator provides all rods, reels and tackle. When the guide spots promising water near shore, you wade from the bank: a chance to work shallow runs and get closer to the fish. Native rainbow trout and Dolly Varden char are catch-and-release year-round. During the two sockeye and two silver salmon runs, you can keep salmon within seasonal limits. The guide cleans your catch at no extra cost. The guide reads the water, positions the boat and teaches technique throughout the day, tailoring the experience to your skill level and what you want to catch.
Eight hours on the water means you fish through prime morning and afternoon hours. Bring warm layered clothing, wool or synthetic socks, waders (felt soles are no longer permitted in Alaska), a two-piece rain suit, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, a camera and a hearty lunch with water or other beverages. The trip operates in all weather. Dress for conditions. Life jackets are provided. If you need transportation to the river, the operator can arrange it.
