The Experience

We started right outside the old Carbo House — which already felt like it had stories hiding in its porch shadows. Our guide, Marcus (he’s lived here forever, I think), handed us these little thermal cameras and grinned like he knew something we didn’t. The air smelled salty and thick, and you could hear music drifting over from the bars down on Tybrisa Street. I kept thinking about how many people must’ve walked these same sidewalks, some not quite ready to leave.

We wandered past shops and neon signs to The Point near 17th street. Marcus pointed at the sandbar out there — apparently, it’s beautiful but also where things have gone wrong for swimmers before. He didn’t get all dramatic about it, just told us what happened and let the wind do most of the talking. At one point a kid in our group asked if ghosts ever show up on the camera; Marcus just shrugged and said, “Sometimes they don’t want to be seen.”

I liked that we took a break at Rock House — honestly needed the restroom by then (and a drink). The place is supposed to be haunted too; someone swore they saw something weird in the arcade room but I was more focused on my fries. After that we hit Sandbar where Fred (the resident ghost) apparently likes to throw things around. Didn’t see him, but I did notice how everyone who worked there seemed to have their own story — like ghosts are just part of Tybee life.

The last bit was down by the dunes near the pier. It was quieter than I expected for a place with so many stories attached. You could feel the sea breeze cutting through whatever you were thinking about. I still think about that view — lights flickering across the water, sand cold under my shoes, wondering if anyone else felt watched or if it was just me being dramatic again.
