The Experience

She handed me a glass before I’d even figured out where to stand. The first stop on our Temecula wine tour was already humming—someone’s laughter mixing with the clink of bottles behind the bar. Our guide, Mike, pointed out the rows of Sangiovese grapes just outside the window and told us how the valley gets its weirdly perfect morning mist. I tried to swirl my Pinot Grigio like I knew what I was doing. Didn’t spill, so that’s something.

The drive between wineries felt like a breather—rolling hills, citrus trees flashing by, that dry California smell you get in June. At Robert Renzoni Vineyards, we ducked into their wine cave (cooler than I expected, both literally and just…vibe-wise). Mike explained how they age some reds down there—he even let us touch one of the barrels. There was this faint oaky scent mixed with something sweet I couldn’t place. Maybe it was just lunch on my mind.

Lunch itself wasn’t included but we stopped for a picnic anyway—someone brought cheese and crackers to share. It’s funny how quickly strangers start swapping stories after a couple pours. At Danza del Sol Winery, I tried to pronounce “Barbera” properly; Li behind the counter grinned and corrected me gently (I probably still got it wrong). The view from their patio stretched all the way to Mount Palomar—sunlight catching on glass, everyone kind of squinting and smiling at once.

I’m not sure if it was the last tasting or just the way people relaxed into each other by then, but there was this easy feeling as we headed back toward Old Town Temecula. Someone started humming along to music on the van’s radio. Sometimes you don’t realize you needed a day like that until it sneaks up on you.
