The experience
You meet the guide at the back of the Walmart parking lot near Phoenix, where a large cooler holds ice, water, sunscreen and bug spray. The offroad section runs through Bulldog Canyon in the northern Sonoran Desert and southern Tonto National Forest. You'll climb hills, navigate obstacles and traverse winding terrain. Expect a mild to moderate bumpy ride. The guide stops frequently so you can photograph saguaro cactus in their native habitat, take in panoramic views and hear about the desert plants and animals that live there. The jeep's air conditioning means you're not exposed to the heat while stationary.
Near the end of the trail, you stop for approximately 30 minutes to watch the sunset. Chairs are provided, and from this spot you have 360-degree views across the desert. After sunset, the drive back takes roughly an hour: 20 minutes on a winding trail, 10 minutes preparing for on-road driving, and 30 minutes returning to the parking lot.
