Snorkel sheltered rock pools without fighting swell or currents

A half-day snorkeling activity in Hilo with a trained guide covering two family-friendly beach parks accessed from the shoreline. You'll snorkel Richardson Ocean Park's rock pools filled at high tide, where sea turtles and monk seals gather in sheltered water, then move to the black sand lagoon to explore corals, rays and tropical reef fish. The guide teaches basics and stays with you throughout.

The experience

Lava from Mauna Kea has shaped Richardson Ocean Park into a natural seawall that blocks swell and currents, leaving rock pools that fill at high tide and turn into shallow, detached swimming holes when the tide drops. This is where the guide takes you first: to water calm enough that you can focus on what's below instead of fighting the ocean. Sea turtles, monk seals and abundant reef fish live here year-round. The brackish lagoons around Hilo support a wide variety of marine life, and your guide will point out how the black sand beaches and volcanic islands formed as you move between the two sites.

New to snorkeling or bringing children means the guide teaches you the basics before you enter the water and stays with you every step. You'll wear a mask, fins and snorkel provided by the operator. The activity runs three hours total and includes island snacks and local juices. Both sites are accessed directly from the shore, so there's no boat involved. You walk in and out on sand and rock.

What’s included

  • All snorkel gear (mask, fins and snorkel).
  • a professionally trained snorkel guide in English.
  • local juice and snacks.
  • transportation from the check-in location to the snorkel site.
