The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost chickened out when I saw the river up close. The Upper Pigeon River looked way wilder than in the photos, and there was this nervous buzz as we suited up at the outpost. Our guide, Jamie (who’s apparently rafted here for over a decade), cracked a joke about “baptism by rapid” that made everyone laugh, even though my hands were already cold just gripping the paddle. I didn’t expect to smell pine so strong or hear the river before we even saw it — kind of like thunder rolling through the trees.

The first splash hit me right in the face. Not gonna lie, it was freezing — but after that, something loosened up inside me. Jamie shouted instructions (“Left! Hard left!”) and somehow we all managed to paddle together without spinning out. The rapids are class III and IV, which sounded technical before but mostly just felt like being tossed around in a really wet rollercoaster. At one point I lost track of time; I think I swallowed half the river from laughing so hard when my friend nearly fell backwards (she didn’t, but it was close). There were families and couples on other rafts too — everyone seemed to forget about looking cool and just yelled their heads off.

We drifted between rapids sometimes, catching our breath while Jamie pointed out where black bears sometimes show up (we didn’t see any, probably for the best). The Smoky Mountains looked different from down low on the water — softer somehow, with mist clinging to the ridges. By the end of our two-hour run, my arms were tired but I felt lighter than when we started. Still thinking about that last big drop — it’s weird how fast fear turns into something you want to do again.
