Climb real rock faces on your first day, not a gym wall

A beginner rock climbing course at Smith Rock State Park in Oregon where you learn knot tying, belaying and climbing technique from certified guides over a full day, with all climbing and safety gear provided. The morning covers essentials. The afternoon puts them to work on the park's gentle slabs and well-bolted routes. Children from age 12 are welcome, and the guide speaks English.

The experience

The course starts with the fundamentals: how to tie the knots that keep you safe, how to belay (manage the rope for a climbing partner), and the footwork and handholds that let you move up real rock. You'll spend the morning session learning these skills with a certified guide, then move onto the rock faces in the afternoon to practice what you've learned. Smith Rock's beginner terrain is built for this. The holds are big and friendly, the routes well-bolted, and the setting itself (rust-colored spires, river otters in the water below, bald eagles overhead) does the rest.

All climbing and safety gear comes with the course, so you arrive with nothing but yourself and leave with the confidence that comes from standing on real stone. The park is big enough to find quiet corners but small enough that you'll feel part of the climbing community there. Bring your own lunch. Water and instruction are covered.
