The experience
The tour picks you up at your hotel in Burlington, South Burlington, or Killington and returns you there at the end of the day, no driving required. You'll visit Shelburne Vineyard first, a twenty-year-old operation with a barn-style tasting room overlooking the vineyard. Their wines come from hybrid grapes bred for Vermont's climate, and you can add local cheeses and charcuterie to your tasting. Charlotte Village Winery, established in 2001, started with blueberries from a ten-acre field and now produces wines from both fruits and grapes. The tasting deck overlooks those same fields and the Adirondack Mountains beyond.
Between wineries, the tour stops at Dakin Farm, a sugarhouse that has been boiling sap for over fifty-eight years. You'll see the production process and browse their store of pure Vermont maple syrup in all grades, plus cob-smoked meats, artisan cheeses, and specialty goods. Lincoln Peak Vineyard, a vine nursery specializing in hybrid grapes, offers tastings with a local cheese and charcuterie plate on a porch overlooking a small pond. The final stop is Woodchuck Hard Cider in Middlebury, where the Vermont Hard Cider Company keeps twenty ciders on tap in a large barn tasting room.
A professional guide drives an air-conditioned vehicle throughout the day, and the group size never exceeds six travelers, so the experience feels like traveling with friends rather than a tour bus. Alcohol consumption is limited to the premises of each winery and cidery. Drinking in the van is not permitted. The tour is available spring and summer only, Wednesday through Sunday.
