The experience

The tour picks you up from Wuksachi Lodge and travels through the park's mountain scenery with an experienced local guide who shares stories about the giant sequoias, wildlife, geology and fire ecology. Depending on the season and road conditions, the day includes the General Sherman Tree, Giant Forest, Tunnel Log (a massive sequoia you can walk or drive beneath) Moro Rock viewpoint, scenic overlooks and meadows. The guide adjusts the itinerary for weather and crowds, so you see the best of what's open that day.

You'll spend the day getting out of the air-conditioned vehicle at several stops for short, easy walks with plenty of time to explore and photograph. This is not a hiking tour. The stops involve gentle strolls that let you connect with the trees and the landscape without strain. A freshly made picnic lunch (your choice of ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, tuna salad, vegetarian, or peanut butter and jelly) arrives with chips, a cookie, bottled water and snack bars. In winter, hot chocolate is available.

The 30-minute travel time from the lodge means you're in the park and exploring within the first hour. Children from age 8 are welcome, and the tour accommodates strollers, folding wheelchairs and service animals. You'll leave with a complimentary Sequoia growing kit as a reminder of the day.
