Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Self-guided Polaris RZR adventure

  • Pick up Polaris RZR XP4 1000cc
  • Receive maps and ice chest
  • Drive Outlaw Trail and Diamond Back
  • Explore Vultee Arch and Schnebly Hill
  • Tour Sedona back country at own pace

The first thing I noticed was the color—the kind of red that gets under your fingernails and stays there for days. We picked up our Polaris RZR just outside Sedona, barely half a mile from Schnebly Hill Trail, and the guy at the counter handed us a map that looked like it’d seen some things. He tossed an ice chest in the back (“Trust me, you’ll want cold drinks,” he said), and we were off, helmets clumsy on our heads but spirits high. The engine had this low growl—felt like it was itching to get dirty.

I let my partner drive first because honestly, I was nervous about scratching up such a beast. Outlaw Trail was our warm-up—red dust everywhere, sun bouncing off the rocks in that way that makes you squint even behind sunglasses. There’s this weird silence when you stop the engine out there, except for wind and maybe a hawk overhead. At Vultee Arch we met another group—locals, I think—who gave us tips on which turns get washed out after rain. One kid had a dog with goggles on (no joke). I still laugh thinking about it.

We took our time—probably too much time at Diamond Back because I kept wanting to climb out and touch the stone (it feels rougher than it looks). Somewhere near Schnebly Hill, we cracked open sodas from the ice chest and just sat on the tailgate watching clouds drift by. Not sure what I expected from a day trip in Sedona’s backcountry but it wasn’t this mix of adrenaline and weird calm. The map got dusty fast; so did my shoes. But I’d do it again just for that feeling of being swallowed up by all that red space.
