The Experience

I didn’t expect the Honda Talon to feel quite so… alive. The first time I pressed the throttle, there was this low growl and the whole thing just sort of leapt forward — not scary, but definitely not what I’m used to back home. The red dust kicked up behind us as we left the rental spot in Sedona, map flapping on my lap (I’m terrible with directions, but somehow it felt okay out here). We’d packed water and snacks in the ice chest they gave us, though honestly I was too distracted by all that wild open space to think about food yet.

The guy who handed us the keys — Jake, I think? — grinned when he saw me double-checking my helmet strap for the third time. “You’ll get used to it,” he said, and he was right. The first few minutes were bumpy but then it just clicked. Out on those trails, with nothing but the sound of tires crunching over rock and some distant birds yelling at each other (ravens maybe?), it’s easy to forget there’s anyone else around. Anyway, it made me laugh because back home everything smells like rain. The Honda Talon handled every rut and dip like it was nothing; I kept expecting to get stuck but nope. At one point we passed another couple who waved and shouted something about a shortcut — no idea if they were right but we stuck to our own path. That’s kind of what I liked best: no guide hovering, just us figuring it out as we went.
