You’ll fly above Sedona’s wild canyons and rivers, spot legendary outlaw hideouts, and catch rare views of Jerome—all from a comfy helicopter with a local guide sharing stories along the way.
The first thing I noticed as we lifted off was how the morning sun hit the red rocks—almost like they were glowing from inside. Our pilot, Mike, started chatting right away, pointing out Sycamore Canyon below us. It’s huge—second only to Oak Creek in this area—and you really get a sense of its size from up here. The air smelled faintly of juniper, which I hadn’t expected at all. If you’re into photography, keep your camera ready; there’s always something new popping up outside those big windows.
We swung out toward the Verde River next. You can actually see the water winding through the desert—looks almost painted on from above. Then came Robber’s Roost, where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid supposedly hid out. Mike had a few stories about them that made me laugh (and wonder what it was like back then). The real highlight for me was Mingus Mountain—nearly 8,000 feet high and just massive up close. Off to one side you’ll spot Jerome clinging to the hillside; it’s wild thinking people used to mine copper there over a hundred years ago. The whole flight felt smooth and relaxed, with plenty of time to soak it all in.
