The experience

You start in the Historic District, walking through a sampling of Savannah's 22 squares where live oak trees shade homes, churches, inns and museums built over centuries. The guide handles the driving between stops, so you move from one pocket of the city to the next without navigating or parking. After the squares, the route heads to Tybee Island, where the lighthouse stands 90 feet tall: the tallest structure in America when it was built in 1736. You tour the lighthouse and the historic support buildings around it, then walk out to Tybee Pier and Pavilion to see the island's resort side facing the Atlantic.

The final stop is Fort Pulaski on Cockspur Island, one of the best-preserved Civil War forts in the country. The guide walks you through the Siege of Fort Pulaski in 1862, when Union military technology forced the Confederate surrender and closed Savannah's port. The fort's brick walls and the story of how it fell are the last piece of the day before the return drive.
