The Experience

The trolley pulls away from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard with the sound of the bell, and suddenly you're moving through a grid of squares laid out in 1733 by General Oglethorpe himself. Spanish moss hangs from the oak trees. Victorian mansions line the streets. Your guide points out the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Lafayette Square, then Forsyth Park with its fountain in the middle of downtown — a landmark since the 1800s. The 90-minute trolley tour moves at the pace of the city, which is to say it doesn't rush. You pass through the Historic District's more than 20 squares, see City Market where locals and tourists still gather, and get the shape of how Savannah was built to move around water and trade.

After the trolley drops you on River Street, there's a gap before the riverboat departs — the timing depends on when your tour started, so you'll have time to walk around, grab coffee, or just stand and look at the water. You need to check in at the Riverboat office at 9 E. River Street at least 30 minutes before boarding. Then you're on the water for another 90 minutes. The captain talks about the port, the ships that come through, the history of the river itself — the thing that made Savannah matter in the first place. You head downriver to Old Fort Jackson, one of the largest and oldest original artillery pieces in the country still there, and you see the riverfront and skyline from the angle most people miss.
