The Experience

I didn’t expect my first bite of a Savannah donut to taste like childhood. We’d just started the Underground Donut Tour, and the air on Broughton Street was thick with that mix of sugar and old brick—kind of humid, but not in a bad way. Our guide, Marcus, handed out warm pastries from a spot I’d never have found alone. He told us about the bakery’s family recipe while a group of kids ran past chasing each other around the benches. I tried to listen and eat at the same time (not graceful), but honestly, it was worth it.

We wandered through Wright Square next, under those oak trees with Spanish moss that looks fake until you see it up close. Marcus pointed out the monument—he had this way of mixing history with little jokes so you didn’t feel like you were in school. The city felt slow in that moment; I could hear someone playing jazz from an open window nearby. It smelled faintly like coffee and rain on stone. At Johnson Square, we tasted something called a “chew”—I still don’t know exactly what was in it, but it was sticky and sweet and made me laugh because I got powdered sugar all over my shirt.

The walk wasn’t rushed. We stopped for photos whenever someone wanted (my friend insisted on one under every tree), and nobody seemed to mind when we lingered by the fountains or peeked into shop windows. By the time we reached City Market, my hands were sticky and my phone was full of weird angles of pastries. There were artists painting outside their studios, people waving from restaurant patios—felt like everyone knew each other here. I think that’s what surprised me most: how easy it was to feel part of Savannah for a morning, just by following a trail of donuts.
