The Experience
You arrive at Robinson Preserve and get fitted with a life jacket and paddle, then climb into a kayak with a transparent hull so clear you watch the water column and the bottom move beneath you as you paddle. The guide leads a small group through the mangrove swamp—a maze of roots and shallow channels—and out to the sand bar where the water opens up. The whole tour runs 2 hours, which is long enough to move through different sections of the preserve without rushing, but short enough to fit into a morning or afternoon without eating the rest of your day.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the preserve holds fish, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, herons, egrets and the occasional dolphin or manatee. Your guide watches for movement and knows where to look; they also answer questions about what you're seeing and the history of the area. Halfway through, the group stops at a 5-story observation tower where the view opens to Tampa Bay, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Anna Maria Island—the guide will take photos if you ask, or you can take your own from the top.
The clear kayak itself is the whole point: it's like snorkeling without entering the water. You stay dry, you don't need to know how to swim, and you see straight down into the ecosystem as it moves. The paddle and life jacket are included, as is a drybag to keep your phone and keys safe. The preserve sits just minutes from Anna Maria Island, Bradenton and Siesta Key, so if you're staying in any of those areas, the drive is short.
