The experience

The ticket agent at Pier 39 asked if we'd done the sunset cruise before, and when we said no, she nodded like she knew exactly what we were about to see. The boat leaves right at golden hour, and for 90 minutes you're on the water while the city switches itself on. You pass the Golden Gate Bridge first (it's massive even when you know it's coming), and then the Bay Bridge lights up in this slow, deliberate way that makes you understand why people come back to San Francisco just to watch that happen. The sea lions are usually around the pier area. We saw a few, though the guide said it depends on the day.

What makes this different from watching from shore is the angle. You're moving past Angel Island, then toward Alcatraz, and the whole skyline is rotating around you instead of staying fixed.
