The route follows the Bay Area's dramatic edge: Stinson Beach comes first, then Muir Woods where the redwoods are so tall and so close together that even from the air they look like they're holding their breath. Mount Tamalpais State Park sits behind them, and the coastline itself — sculpted by hundreds of millions of years of seismic activity — doesn't look like it belongs to the same state as the flatlands you drove through to get here.
