Each player gets a custom role with challenges tailored just to them.

An app-led scavenger hunt in San Francisco's Embarcadero and Financial District where you solve trivia, tackle photo challenges and compete as a team or individually using the Let's Roam app. You pick your role—Brainiac, Photographer, or Mapper—and work through riddles and challenges at your own pace over roughly two hours. The app tracks your progress on a leaderboard, and you get digital copies of the photos you take along the way.

The Experience

You start whenever you want—no fixed departure time, no guide waiting. Download the Let's Roam app, choose your role, and head out into the Embarcadero and Financial District with your team or on your own. The app feeds you riddles, photo challenges and trivia questions tied to the landmarks around you: the Ferry Building, the sculptures tucked between skyscrapers, the monumental architecture that defines the neighborhood. Each person on your team gets a custom challenge set, so even if you're walking the same route, you're solving different puzzles.

The three roles—Brainiac, Photographer, Mapper—split the work so nobody's just following along. Brainiacs tackle the trivia and riddles; Photographers hunt for specific shots; Mappers navigate and spot locations. The app shows you where to go, keeps score on a live leaderboard, and lets you see how your team stacks up in real time. You move at your own pace, stop when you want, and take as long as you need to finish—there's no clock ticking you toward a bus or a meeting point.

By the end, you've uncovered stories about the Ferry Building's history, discovered hidden parks and sculptures, and collected photos from the hunt. All of those photos get sent to you digitally after you're done. The whole thing runs on your phone, so bring it fully charged or pack a power bank. Support is available by phone, email or chat if you get stuck, and the app works on the routes where public transit runs nearby, so you can use Muni or walk between stops.

Top questions

Can I start the scavenger hunt whenever I want, or is there a set time?

The San Francisco scavenger hunt is self-guided, so you start at any time that suits you—no fixed departure, no waiting for a group. Download the app and begin whenever you're ready.

What happens if my team and I want to split up and do different roles?

Each participant selects their own interactive role with unique challenges tailored to them, so your team can split the Brainiac, Photographer and Mapper roles and work separately or together as you move through the Embarcadero and Financial District.

Will I need to pay extra for entry to any of the landmarks or attractions?

The scavenger hunt itself doesn't require paid entry to attractions—you're solving challenges and taking photos from public spaces and streets. No separate attraction fees are included, so you explore at street level and from outside.

What's the Ferry Building and why does it matter for this hunt?

The Ferry Building is a monumental San Francisco landmark in the Embarcadero, and the hunt includes trivia about its history—one of the riddles asks what nearly caused its downfall and who frequents it today, so you'll learn its story as you work through the challenges.

Do I need a smartphone to do this hunt, and what if my battery dies?

Yes, you navigate and interact with everything through the Let's Roam app on your phone, so a fully charged device is essential. Bring a power bank if you think you'll need it, since the app runs the whole two-hour hunt.

Can I do this hunt alone, or does it have to be a group?

You can go solo or bring a team—the hunt works either way. If you're alone, you still pick a role and compete on the leaderboard; if you're in a group, you can collaborate or go head-to-head on the same challenges.
