The Experience

Giraffes are already moving across the savanna when you arrive at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, 35 miles north of the city. The Africa tram tour runs for 30 minutes past herds of elephants and zebras, but the real pull is the walking trails — miles of them cutting through the Heart of Africa, a 32-acre section where you'll stand at overlooks watching lions, tigers, and endangered species move through their own space. The pass gets you one visit here, or you can split your two visits between the Zoo and the Safari Park, depending on what you want to see.

At the San Diego Zoo itself, the Elephant Odyssey is the newest draw. It's built around a fossil dig site where you walk through evidence of what lived here thousands of years ago — mammoths, saber-toothed tigers — and then step into the habitats of animals still here now: elephants, lions, a jaguar. The Zoo runs a guided bus tour and unlimited Skyfari aerial tram rides, so you're not walking the whole thing if you don't want to. With over 4,000 animals representing 800 species, the Zoo alone can eat up a full day, which is why the two-visit pass makes sense. You scan your phone at entry — no printing, no lines — and you're in.

The pass is valid for a year from purchase, so you don't have to use both visits back-to-back. That flexibility matters if you're visiting San Diego for a week or planning to come back. Strollers and wheelchairs rent at the front plaza if you need them, and the tram systems at both locations mean you can move through without walking every inch. Nairobi Village at the Safari Park has shops and food if you want to break up the day.
