You’ll board a small Zodiac boat in San Diego with a local captain and set out from Mission Bay for close-up whale watching—blue whales if you’re lucky—and pods of dolphins racing alongside you. Expect salty air, windbreakers provided, sea lions lounging nearby, and real conversation with your guide as you spot wildlife together.
We were already zipping past the breakwater when I realized how close to the water we really were—like, you could actually smell the salt and even the faint fishiness that clings to your jacket after a while. Our captain, Mark (he looked like he’d been doing this forever), pointed out a spout in the distance before anyone else noticed. “That’s probably a blue,” he said, and honestly, my heart did this weird flutter because I’d never seen anything that big move so quietly.
The boat itself is tiny compared to those big tourist catamarans—just us and maybe six others. You feel every bump and spray. At one point, dolphins started racing alongside us—bottle nose, Mark said—and you could hear them breathing when they surfaced. It’s weirdly loud but also kind of peaceful? I tried to take a photo but mostly ended up with blurry splashes. Someone behind me laughed and said it’s better just to watch anyway.
I didn’t expect how much I’d love seeing all the other stuff too—sea lions flopped over each other on a buoy, some bird that Mark called a cormorant drying its wings like it owned the place. The windbreaker they gave us came in handy; it gets chilly fast out there. There was this moment when everything went quiet except for the engine hum and distant gulls, and I just watched the horizon for what felt like ages. Still think about that view sometimes.
Your day includes boarding a 22' expedition-style Zodiac boat at Mission Bay with an experienced USCG-licensed captain guiding you to prime wildlife spots. You’ll get waterproof windbreakers and approved life jackets before heading out to spot whales, dolphins, sea lions, ocean birds and more along San Diego’s coast—all in a small group setting for better views and real conversations.
