San Diego Tidepool Tour with Marine Biologist
Turn over rocks and find octopuses hiding in the intertidal zone
A 90-minute guided tidepool tour in San Diego led by a marine biologist who identifies sea stars, anemones, crabs, hermit crabs, snails and sometimes octopuses while explaining how each organism fits into the intertidal ecosystem. The group stays small, children are welcome from age 4, and you'll need moderate fitness to navigate the rocky terrain and sign a waiver before the tour begins.

The experience
San Diego's tide pools are only accessible during low tide, and a marine biologist guide times the tour to catch the window when the most creatures are exposed. You'll move across the rocks looking into pools, turning over rocks to find hiding animals, and learning what each species eats, how it defends itself, and why it lives where it does. The guide handles the identifications and the explanations. You do the looking and the discovering.
The tour runs 90 minutes and covers the hands-on part only. You'll arrange your own way to and from the meeting point. Moderate fitness matters because the terrain is uneven, wet and slippery, and you'll be crouching and climbing over rocks the whole time. Children from age 4 can join, though younger kids will need help navigating the pools safely.
