The Experience

The tour started right at Santa Fe Depot—there’s something about old train stations that makes me want to look up. Our guide, Carlos, had this way of weaving stories into the drive through the Gaslamp District and Little Italy (I could smell garlic drifting from somewhere, even though it was barely noon). He played old surf tunes between facts about Alonzo Horton and the city’s wild past—honestly, I didn’t expect to laugh so much before lunch.

Crossing the Coronado Bridge felt like flying for a second. The windows filled with water and skyline, then suddenly we were on Coronado itself. Some folks wandered off toward the Hotel Del Coronado; I grabbed a coffee and sat by the sand watching kids chase gulls. There’s this salty breeze that sticks to your skin here. After that, we zipped up to La Jolla Cove where sea lions barked over the sound of waves—I got closer than I meant to (they’re louder than you’d think), but their sleepy faces made everyone smile.

Mount Soledad was just a quick stop—fifteen minutes or so—but standing there above everything, with wind tugging at my jacket and all those names carved in stone…it made me pause. Balboa Park next: sunlight filtered through eucalyptus leaves while street performers juggled near fountains. I wandered into a tiny museum shop just because it smelled like old paper. Last stop was Old Town San Diego—dusty streets, creaky porches, people selling churros out of carts. My feet were tired but I still lingered by Casa de Estudillo thinking about how many stories must’ve started right there.
