The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the wind whipped my hair as we pulled away from the dock—sort of salty, but also that faint sunscreen smell from someone nearby. Our captain, Mark, had this easy way of pointing out things without making it a lecture. He nodded at the Maritime Museum ships—Star of India looked almost ghostly in the morning light—and then we were gliding right past the USS Midway. It’s massive up close, honestly a little intimidating. I tried to imagine landing a plane on it and just shook my head.

We sailed under the Coronado Bridge next. I’d seen it from land before but floating underneath is something else—it curves overhead like a blue ribbon, and you can see tiny cars crawling along. Mark told us how high it was (200 feet!), and someone asked if people ever walk across (nope). The water here is choppier; you feel it in your legs, but it’s kind of fun, like being let in on some secret rhythm of San Diego Bay.

There was soda and wine on board—nothing fancy but cold and perfect for that sunny stretch near Embarcadero. At one point I just sat back and watched downtown San Diego slide by, all glassy buildings reflecting sunlight so bright I had to squint. A couple next to me pointed out Cabrillo National Monument in the distance; you could barely make out the lighthouse but somehow it felt important to spot it anyway. The whole thing felt slower than I expected—in a good way.

I liked that nobody rushed us or tried too hard to entertain. Mark chatted about growing up here (“I still get excited every time we pass Seaport Village,” he said), but mostly let us just be quiet when we wanted. The seagulls were louder than anyone else on board. Even now, days later, I keep thinking about that moment under the bridge—just water, sky, and this feeling like you could stay out there forever if you wanted.
