The experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the wind whipped my hair as we pulled away from the dock: sort of salty, but also that faint sunscreen smell from someone nearby. At one point I just sat back and watched downtown San Diego slide by, all glassy buildings reflecting sunlight so bright I had to squint. A couple next to me pointed out Cabrillo National Monument in the distance. You could barely make out the lighthouse but somehow it felt important to spot it anyway. The whole thing felt slower than I expected: in a good way.

I liked that nobody rushed us or tried too hard to entertain. The seagulls were louder than anyone else on board. Even now, days later, I keep thinking about that moment under the bridge.
