The Experience

I’ll be honest — I didn’t expect the Salt River to feel so far from everything. We left the main road behind, bumping along dirt tracks for what felt like ages (it’s about 45 minutes from the closest town, but it feels longer when you’re watching cacti flick past the window). The air was already warm, that dry kind of heat that makes your skin tingle, and I could smell dust and river water before we even saw the canyon. Our guide, Jake, handed out helmets and cracked a joke about “embracing chaos” — which made me laugh but also wonder what I’d signed up for.

The first splash hit me right in the face — cold enough to make me yelp. The Salt River isn’t gentle, not in spring anyway. Ten miles of whitewater means you’re paddling hard one minute and then drifting under these massive red cliffs the next. Saguaro cactus everywhere, their arms thrown up like they’re cheering us on (or maybe warning us?).
