The Experience

The first thing I noticed when we climbed onto the old bus in Salt Lake City was how everyone seemed just a little nervous—someone joked about “bad omens” and our guide grinned like he’d heard it a thousand times. We rolled past quiet streets, headlights bouncing off brick buildings that looked even older at night. At the Rio Grande Train Depot, the air felt colder (or maybe I imagined it), and our guide told us about the Lady in Blue. I tried to snap a photo but my hands were shaking a bit—probably just from the chill, right?

We got off at almost every stop, which surprised me—I thought we’d mostly stay on the bus. At the city cemetery, the grass was damp and there was this earthy smell, like rain on stone. I kept glancing up at windows in the old City & County Building, half-expecting to see something move behind the glass. Our guide didn’t rush us; he let people ask questions or just stand quietly if they wanted. By the end, I realized I’d stopped worrying about whether ghosts are “real” or not—it was more about sharing these strange stories together in the dark, with strangers who felt less like strangers by then.
