Salmon River Rafting near Riggins: Full-Day Whitewater
Class III whitewater, a riverside lunch, and the option to paddle inflatable kayaks or sit in a raft
A full-day rafting activity on the Salmon River near Riggins, Idaho, where you paddle or float through Class III whitewater, build skills on mild rapids before lunch, then tackle bigger water in the afternoon. The day includes van transport to and from the put-in, all gear and a riverside picnic. It runs 7.5 hours and suits anyone 8 and up with moderate fitness.
The experience
You start at 8:30 am with a 15-minute van ride upriver to the put-in, where guides hand out PFDs, helmets, and splash tops. After a paddling orientation that covers the techniques you'll need, the day opens with mild whitewater to build confidence. Before lunch, you'll hit one Class III rapid with big waves: the first real test of what you've learned. The group pulls over at the river's edge for a riverside picnic and a chance to swim.
The afternoon is where the whitewater picks up. After floating past Riggins, Timezone Rapid comes at you with holes and waves big enough to make you work the paddle. A few more rapids follow, and if you're in an inflatable kayak, you'll spend time at a surfing spot learning to ride the kayak before moving on. By the time the takeout arrives, your arms are tired and the van is waiting for a 10-minute ride back to the shop.
You choose between rafts and inflatable kayaks when you book. Both come with all the gear you need, and the guides handle the setup and the pack-out. Lunch and the van transport are included. Bring sunscreen and a willingness to get wet.
