The Sanderson Sisters' Salem: Five Hocus Pocus Filming Spots on Foot

You walk to five Hocus Pocus filming locations across Salem's downtown and out to Pioneer Village, hearing movie trivia and local history along the way. The tour is 2.5 hours and covers three miles of uneven terrain at a brisk pace, ending away from the start point. Bring comfortable shoes, plan for no restrooms on the route, and arrange your own transport back if needed.

Step-by-step itinerary

Hocus Pocus movie locations tour

  • Start at Salem Common
  • Visit downtown Salem Hocus Pocus site
  • See Ropes Mansion, Alison's house
  • Explore one of Salem's oldest cemeteries
  • End tour at Pioneer Village museum

The Experience

The Salem Common spreads out in front of you, and somewhere on this grass, the Sanderson Sisters walked. That's the real pull of this tour — you're standing where the 1993 film actually shot, not imagining it from a distance. The walk covers about three miles through downtown Salem and out to Pioneer Village, hitting five locations that made it into the final cut: Salem Common itself, one of the top sites for Hocus Pocus fans; the Ropes Mansion, which played Allison's house; an old cemetery; and finally Pioneer Village, the oldest living history museum in the country. The whole thing runs two and a half hours, and you'll get Hocus Pocus trivia woven through the stops, plus context about the Salem Witch Trials and how the city earned its "Witch City" name.

This isn't a gentle stroll. The terrain is uneven in places, and the pace moves fast — the tour covers real ground, and you need to be ready for that. Comfortable shoes aren't optional; they're essential. The route doesn't loop back to where you started, so you'll need to arrange your own way back downtown (Uber or Lyft work fine from Pioneer Village). If you're going on a weekend between June and October, Pioneer Village has an optional $5 entry fee if you want to go inside; weekday tours won't have access to the village itself since it's only open weekends. Rain doesn't stop the tour, so dress for the weather.

The group size can go up to 40 people, so you're not getting a private experience, but you are getting someone who knows the film and the city's history. There are no public restrooms on the route, so plan that before you start. Dogs are welcome if you want to bring one along. The whole thing is outdoors — no building interiors — which means you're moving through Salem's actual streets and spaces, not filtered through a museum or indoor venue.

What’s included

  • Your tour includes visits to five Hocus Pocus filming locations across Salem, Hocus Pocus trivia throughout the walk, and information about the Salem Witch Trials and local history.
