The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost missed the start of this Saint Augustine historical tour because I got lost trying to find parking (ironic, since free parking is included). Flagler’s second one,” he said, winking). He told us how Henry Flagler basically built half the city for his friends, and then we zipped past Memorial Presbyterian Church where Flagler is actually buried. The air was thick with humidity but you could still catch whiffs of frying dough from some street vendor near St. George Street. My shirt stuck to my back but I didn’t mind; there was too much to look at.

I’d heard about Castillo de San Marcos before but seeing it up close — all weathered stone and cannon scars — was something else. Mike talked about battles and sieges like they happened last week. At Mission Nombre de Dios he slowed down so we could see the giant cross peeking through the trees; some folks made the sign of the cross as we passed. I tried to snap a photo but my phone caught mostly my own thumb (classic me). We even rolled by Potter’s Wax Museum and Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, which looked way less cheesy in person than I expected.

The best bit? Mike let my dog sit right up front next to him — apparently pets are always welcome here. There were moments when everything felt oddly quiet for such an old city; just the soft hum of our little cart and distant church bells somewhere behind us. Sometimes history feels heavy but here it just felt alive. I still think about that view over the Bridge of Lions — white statues gleaming in afternoon haze — not sure why it stuck with me, but it did.
