You arrive at Butcher Jones Recreation Site, where your guide goes over the kayak, paddle, life jacket and dry bag before launch. The guide is local to the Phoenix area and certified through the American Canoe Association for instruction and water safety, so the setup is straightforward and the safety talk is real. Once on the water, you paddle along the shoreline and cross the open lake toward Willow Springs Canyon, where the route narrows between canyon walls. The blue water against the desert topography is unlike anywhere else in the region.

Wildlife sightings are common on the lake: bald eagles, bighorn sheep, and blue herons move through the canyons and shoreline. The paddle to Willow Springs Canyon is the main crossing. Once there, you stop for a snack break before heading back along the same route to Butcher Jones. The whole outing takes three hours, and the small-group format means your guide can adjust the pace and watch the water conditions as the day unfolds.
