The experience
The tour starts with a drive from Denver to Lyons, where the foothills meet the plains, for an easy streamside walk where prairie dogs, Bald and Golden Eagles, Great Horned Owls, and Bighorn sheep appear regularly. From there you move into the park itself, stopping to photograph the Chapel on the Rock and drink from a mountain spring. If birds interest you, the guide can route the day through a certified wildlife habitat yard where feeders attract Evening Grosbeaks, Red Crossbills, Cassin's Finches, Steller's Jays, and Mountain Chickadees: in summer, Band-tailed Pigeons show up too.
The bulk of the day unfolds through several short, easy hikes in places most visitors miss. These are the spots where mule deer, elk, moose, yellow-bellied marmots, and American pikas turn up, along with woodpeckers, nutcrackers, and bluebirds. Your guide carries a spotting scope with a digiscoping adapter so you can photograph what you find through the lens, and brings binoculars and hiking poles if you need them. Along the way, the guide explains the ecology and natural history of the terrain.
Lunch is a vegetarian sandwich with chips, mixed nuts, and fruit. Water and snacks come in a Yeti cooler. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the whole day runs about eight hours including the drive from Denver. You can arrange pickup from either Denver or Boulder.

Is this one for you?Choose this tour if you want to spend a full day searching for wildlife in the places where animals actually congregate, rather than following the main park roads where crowds gather. The small-group format and the guide's knowledge of off-the-beaten-path habitats make the difference between seeing animals and seeing crowds.
