The Experience

I’ll admit I didn’t expect to get attached to Rhode Island in just one day. But the second we rolled out of Providence, our guide (Mike, born-and-raised here — you could hear it in his stories) had us all peering out the windows like kids. There was this early-morning hush over the city park as he explained why Rhode Island even exists — something about rebels and religious freedom. I still remember the smell of wet grass and that weird mix of city and sea air. It felt… honest? Like nothing was trying too hard.

We made a quick stop at some spot tied to the Revolution (I’m not great with dates), but Mike got so into it I started picturing powdered wigs and angry colonists right there on the sidewalk. The drive along the bay was pure New England: clapboard houses, little fishing villages where people waved even if they didn’t know you. Lunch was in a fishing town — I tried clam cakes for the first time (greasy fingers, salty bite, kind of perfect). A woman at a shop laughed when I called them “fritters.” Guess that’s not what locals say.

The lighthouse stop was windy enough to steal your hat if you weren’t careful. Standing there with Atlantic spray on my face, watching boats drift by — it hit me how small this state really is, but also how much story is packed into every mile. Driving down Ocean Drive past those old Gilded Age mansions felt almost surreal; I kept craning my neck for a better look at gates bigger than my apartment. We passed through a town Mike swore was “the most patriotic in America.” Not sure how you measure that, but there were flags everywhere.

On the way back we stopped for homemade pie and fruit at some roadside place — can’t remember the name now but it tasted like summer. The last beach stop was quiet except for gulls and some kids daring each other into cold water. Even now, days later, I keep thinking about that light on the sand and how everyone seemed to slow down for just a minute before heading home.
