The Experience
I almost missed the boat, literally. I’d parked way too far from Gig Harbor’s dock and ended up jogging past a couple walking their golden retriever, clutching my bag of snacks (no alcohol allowed, which I found out last minute). The captain just grinned and waved me on board like he’d seen this before. Riviera, the boat, looked straight out of an old photo: polished wood, a bit creaky in places but proud. He told us about the old twin bridges near Tacoma (one famously collapsed in 1940, he said it with a half-smile like he still couldn’t believe it happened). The sun started dipping behind some low clouds, painting everything gold except for Mt. Rainier, which stayed stubbornly blue and distant. I tried to snap a photo but honestly, none of them do it justice.
Cruising under the Fox Island Bridge was weirdly thrilling. There’s this rush as you move with the current one way and then against it coming back. Some seals popped up near Carr Inlet, just their heads at first. Someone next to me whispered they’d never seen one outside a zoo before. Our guide knew all the names of the little bays we passed and tossed in bits about pioneer families and Salish Sea tribes without making it feel like a lecture. There were quiet stretches too where nobody talked at all. Just water slapping gently against the hull and that cool Northwest air on your face.
I didn’t expect to feel so much just floating there. Maybe because you’re moving slow enough to notice small things: how people wave from their docks or how even expensive houses look kind of humble from the water. By the time we looped back to Gig Harbor, my snack bag was empty and my phone battery nearly gone from too many photos I’ll probably never sort through. Still thinking about that last view of Mt. Rainier fading into dusk. It’s stuck with me more than I thought it would.
