Underground crawling and climbing instead of paved cave tours

A private 3-hour guided wild cave adventure in New Mexico for ages 6 and up, where you crawl, climb and explore unmaintained passages with an expert guide. All safety equipment (helmet, lights, knee pads, gloves) is provided; groups stay under 7 people; bottled water and snacks are included. No prior caving experience is required.

The experience

You arrive at Parks Ranch and walk a short way down a dirt road to the cave entrance: most cars reach it fine, though low-clearance vehicles may need to park and walk a bit. Once inside, you spend 3 hours underground with your guide, moving through passages on your own power: crawling through tight sections, climbing over rock formations, and navigating the cave floor. The guide points out how water shaped the passages, what lives in the darkness, and why the cave matters to the landscape. You learn by doing, not by standing on a boardwalk.

The small group size, no more than 7 people, means your guide tailors the pace and route to who you are. Families with kids as young as 6 move at a different speed than a group of adults looking for a harder push, and the guide adjusts. You wear a helmet with a light mounted on it, knee pads to protect against the rock, and gloves for grip and scrape protection. Bottled water and snacks come with you underground. Closed-toe shoes that can get wet are the only gear you bring. Everything else is provided.

This is not a show cave with stairs and handrails. You are moving through a wild cave the way cavers do, which means you need to be comfortable crawling, climbing and getting a little dirty. The guide handles safety and navigation. You handle the physical effort of moving your own body through the passages. If you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns, this activity is not a fit. You also need to be in good physical shape to manage 3 hours of climbing and crawling underground.

Operated by Type II Adventures

Is this one for you?The 3 hours involve sustained crawling and climbing, so this suits travelers who are comfortable with physical effort and getting dirty underground. If you prefer a gentler pace or have mobility limits, a commercial show cave with paved trails and handrails is a better fit.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly do I do for 3 hours inside the cave?

You crawl through tight passages, climb over rock formations, and walk across the cave floor while your guide explains the geology, ecology and conservation of the cave system. You are moving under your own power the whole time, not watching a demonstration or walking a maintained trail.

What if my car can't handle the dirt road to the cave?

Most cars make it down the short dirt road just fine. If your vehicle has low clearance, you can park at the top and walk the rest of the way. It is a short distance.

Can I bring my kids, and how old do they need to be?

The activity is designed for ages 6 and up. Your guide will tailor the pace and route to your group, so families with younger children move at a different speed than adults seeking a harder challenge.

Do I need caving experience or special fitness level?

No prior caving experience is required. You do need to be in good physical shape to handle 3 hours of crawling and climbing. If you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns, this activity is not suitable.

What safety gear do I get, and what do I bring?

The operator provides a helmet with a mounted light, knee pads, gloves, bottled water and snacks. You must wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet. Everything else is included.
