A private half-day fishing charter in San Diego for up to six people aboard Captain Shaun's boat, with all gear and tackle provided. You fish for rockfish, bass, lingcod, halibut and other species along the coast while the captain instructs and assists at your pace. Wildlife sightings of sea lions, dolphins and whales often happen during the trip.

The experience

Captain Shaun runs Pelican Sportfishing and handles the boat himself, so you're not shuffled through a group operation. The half-day means six hours on the water targeting whatever's biting that day: rockfish, bass, lingcod, halibut, sheephead, bonito and yellowtail all show up depending on the season and conditions. He teaches you what you need to know before you cast, then steps back or stays close depending on how much help you want. Beginners and experienced anglers both end up comfortable because the pace is yours.

The boat works the kelp forests and structures along San Diego's coastline where the fish hold. You'll often see sea lions, dolphins, whales and seabirds while you're fishing. The wildlife sightings are common enough that they're part of what makes the day memorable. Fishing gear, tackle, bottled water and fish cleaning are all included, so you show up ready to fish and leave with your catch cleaned and ready to cook.

A current California fishing license is required and costs $23. You can buy it at the pickup location before boarding. Children under 5 are not permitted, and infants must sit on an adult's lap. No glass bottles are allowed on the boat.
