The experience

You arrive in West Yellowstone with a free day and no fixed itinerary. Your guide meets you, learns what you want to see and how far you want to go, and builds the route from there. Want to spend the morning on one challenging backcountry trail and call it done? Prefer to string together three or four shorter hikes across different landscapes? The choice is yours. The guide knows where wolves, grizzly bears and bison move through the park at different times of day, and carries high-powered spotting scopes so you can watch them safely from a distance. You travel in a private vehicle between trailheads, which means no waiting for other groups and no compromise on timing.

The day unfolds at your pace. You can linger over photography, study wildflowers in detail, or cover as many miles as you want: your guide adjusts to your style and watches for hazards. The hikes range from serene alpine lakes and quiet meadows to hidden thermal features far from the crowds. Lunch is included, as are bottled water and snacks throughout the day. Your guide documents wildlife encounters with photos and video and shares them with you afterward at no additional charge.

The total time is eight hours, which includes driving between locations. Your guide carries binoculars and a spotting scope, so you don't need to bring your own optics. Service animals are welcome. If you're staying outside the standard pickup zone, call ahead to confirm the details.
