The experience
The hike starts as daylight fades. Your guide points out early stars and shares stories about constellations and dark-sky ecology while you're still on the trail in fading light. Once darkness settles, you switch to headlamps and move deeper into the high desert. This is where the nocturnal world reveals itself: you'll use UV flashlights to search for glowing scorpions, listen for calls of nocturnal birds and mammals, and learn about native plants, geological features, and the cultural history that shaped this landscape. The cooler evening temperatures and the quiet solitude of the wilderness are part of what makes this different from a daytime hike.
Everything is provided: Black Diamond headlamps, UV flashlights for scorpion spotting, trekking poles, bottled water, snacks, and rain ponchos if the weather turns. Your guide is WFR certified and leads the entire journey in English. Private transportation is included, so you don't arrange your own way to the trailhead. The entrance fee is covered, and the laser pointer used during the astronomy talk is part of the package.
The terrain is manageable for most fitness levels, though the darkness and uneven ground mean you're moving carefully and deliberately. The 3.5-hour commitment includes the full arc from sunset through deep night, so you experience the desert's transition rather than arriving after dark.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What kind of wildlife will I actually see on a night hike in Prescott?
Glowing scorpions are the main attraction you'll spot with UV flashlights, along with nocturnal birds and mammals whose calls your guide will help you identify. The guide also points out native plants and geological features visible by headlamp.
Do I need hiking experience or special fitness to do this tour?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though the darkness and uneven desert terrain mean you'll be moving carefully. The guide provides trekking poles to help with footing on the trail.
How dark does it get, and will I be able to see the stars clearly?
Prescott's dark skies mean stars become visible as twilight ends, and your guide shares constellation stories and dark-sky ecology throughout the hike. Once full darkness settles, your headlamp lets you see the trail while your eyes adjust to see stars overhead.
Is this a group tour or private, and who else will be hiking with me?
This is a private, guided tour, so it's just your group with one certified hiking guide. No other travelers join the hike.
