The Experience

You start on land at Mere Point Boat Launch, where your Master Maine Guide walks you through the basics of sea kayaking before you ever touch the water. Once you launch, the paddle heads south to the end of Mere Point—a natural photo stop—then crosses open water to an island. That's where the tour pauses: you stretch your legs, eat homemade hot muffins, drink tea or lemonade, and walk the shoreline to look for shells and birds. The guide shares the history of the area as you paddle, pointing out lobstermen at work, oyster farms, and the landmarks that shaped Casco Bay.

The return follows a different route, staying close to the islands on the way back to your starting point. Along the way, watch for sea gulls, cormorants, ducks, great blue herons, snowy egrets, osprey, and if you're lucky, bald eagles or a seal. The whole paddle takes three hours and is designed for families and paddlers of all ages and abilities. Single kayaks and double kayaks are both available, so you can paddle solo or bring someone with you. All the gear you need—kayak, paddle, life jacket and safety equipment—is provided, and the guide adjusts the day to match the water conditions and how the group is paddling.

The tour is subject to weather: if wind, rain or rough conditions move in, the operator can move the paddle to a second location with better conditions, or reschedule you for another date or offer a full refund. Infants sit on an adult's lap. You'll need to complete a liability waiver and medical form before launch, and you should wear shoes that stay on your feet, bring a hat and sunglasses, and dress in layers—a windbreaker or synthetic fleece works well for the water temperature.
