Cut your own bouquet from fields of zinnias, cosmos, dahlias and sunflowers

A 45-minute flower-picking experience at a South Dakota cut flower farm where you handpick zinnias, cosmos, dahlias and sunflowers, then arrange them into a bouquet to take home. The farm provides a jar with water, cutting snips and floral food. You can bring your own container if you prefer. Children from age 2 are welcome.

The experience

You start with a jar of water and a pair of flower cutting snips. The farm staff walks you through how to cut the blooms without damaging the stems, and offers design tips if you want them, but the arrangement is entirely yours. Then you move into the fields and pick whatever flowers fit in your vase, surrounded by butterflies, bumblebees and honeybees. The whole outing takes about 45 minutes from start to finish.

At the end, the staff tops up the water in your jar, helps you capture a photo of your finished bouquet, and goes over how to keep the flowers fresh at home. You take the arrangement home with the jar, the snips stay at the farm, and a packet of floral food goes with you so the blooms last longer. If you want to cut more flowers than one container holds, you can bring an additional jar or vase and pick a second arrangement.
