The Experience

You show up at the Riverbound shop in Tempe expecting to grab a kayak and go, and instead the staff walks you through the whole setup — how to inflate it properly, where the seams are, how to pack it back down. It's the kind of thing that takes an extra twenty minutes but actually matters when you're alone on the water. The gear is clean, the pump works, and they don't just hand you a paddle and a life jacket; they ask where you're thinking of going and steer you toward the right spot for the day.

The inflatable kayak rental includes everything you need to paddle: the kayak itself, an inflation pump, a paddle, and a life jacket. You load it into your own vehicle (transportation to the water is on you), drive to one of the launch spots — Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, or the Lower Salt River if you're going between May and October — and you're paddling on your own schedule. No guide, no group, no itinerary except the one you make. The Salt River is where people go to see the wild horses that live along the banks, plus otters and bald eagles if you're patient and quiet. The lakes are calmer if you want a steadier day.
