The Experience

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a city bike tour in Philadelphia—thought it’d just be a checklist of landmarks. But right from the start in Fairmount, our guide Sam (he grew up around here) made it feel like we were just out riding with friends. The city was waking up as we rolled past corner bakeries and that smell of fresh pretzels—honestly, I almost stopped right there.

We zigzagged through Rittenhouse Square and Washington Square Park, dodging dog walkers and kids on scooters. Sam pointed out the first hospital in America—never knew that was here. The Schuylkill River Trail was quieter than I expected; you could hear the water slapping against old boathouses and there was this one stretch where the trees actually muffled the city noise for a second. It’s weird how peaceful Philly can get if you’re not rushing.

The Rocky Steps at the Art Museum were busier (someone played Eye of the Tiger on their phone—couldn’t help but laugh). I tried running up them but… let’s just say my cycling legs weren’t made for stairs. The real surprise for me was Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens—mosaic tiles everywhere, sunlight bouncing off bits of mirror and glass. It felt both chaotic and kind of beautiful, like South Street itself. Sam told us about Isaiah Zagar’s story while we stood there catching our breath; I still think about that view whenever I see broken pottery now.

By the end, my legs were tired but not wrecked, and honestly? I saw more of Philly in those three hours than I ever did living here for a year. Oh—and helmets are included (my hair never forgave me), bikes too. If you’ve got at least four people together, they’ll run it even if you’re all hopeless at directions like me.
