Master ground belay at an outdoor crag and understand how the system actually works

A 4-hour outdoor rock climbing class at Castle Rock State Park for climbers who've completed Level 1 or have indoor gym experience. The clinic reviews basic safety skills, then teaches traditional ground belay techniques: moving beyond gym-only grigri experience to understand the full dynamics of a belay system. Professional guide and all climbing gear included. Minimum age 12.

The experience

Castle Rock State Park is where you'll spend the afternoon if you've already climbed indoors or taken the first class. The 4-hour session starts with a quick review of figure eight knots, harness setup, and top-rope climbing to make sure everyone's on the same page. Then the real work begins: learning how to belay on real rock, with a real anchor, using the techniques that work everywhere climbers go.

Most gym climbers have only used an auto-belay device or a grigri: mechanical systems that do some of the thinking for you. Ground belay is different. You'll learn the hand positions, the body mechanics, and the feel of managing a partner's weight through a traditional system. A professional guide walks you through each step and watches your technique so you understand not just what to do, but why the system works the way it does. All gear is provided.

Top questions

What's the difference between this class and what I've done in a climbing gym?

Gym climbing usually relies on auto-belay devices or grigri systems that manage the rope mechanically. This class teaches traditional ground belay, where you manage the rope and your partner's safety through hand and body position: the technique used at outdoor crags and in most climbing partnerships.

Do I need to have taken your Level 1 class to sign up?

No. You need basic climbing experience (comfort with figure eight knots, harness setup, and top-rope climbing), but that can come from indoor gym time. Level 1 is one way to get there, but gym experience counts.

What's included in the 4-hour session?

The guide, all climbing gear, and instruction in belay technique. Taxes and fees are covered. Gratuities are separate.
