Spot Florida Scrub-jays, Bald Eagles and a dozen other species in one morning.

A private half-day birding activity in Central Florida for up to two people, led by a guide with field research credentials and over a decade of birding tour experience. You hike a section of Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area in the morning, then move to Joe Overstreet Landing for close views of raptors and Bald Eagles. The guide tailors the pace to your style, whether you're chasing a species list or taking time for photography.

The experience

You're picked up and driven to Three Lakes WMA, where you'll spend the morning hiking and birding a section of the preserve. The guide knows where to find Florida Scrub-jays, Brown-headed Nuthatches, Bachman's Sparrows, and other species that live in Central Florida's scrub habitat. After the morning hike, you move to Joe Overstreet Landing, where the light and vantage points are best for photographing raptors, Bald Eagles, Limpkins, Snail Kites, and Swallow-tailed Kites. The guide adjusts the rhythm based on what you came for: if you're a lister building your count, you move efficiently between spots. If you're a photographer, you stay put and wait for the angle.

Your guide holds a master naturalist certification and has led field trips for birding festivals for over a decade. They bring field research training to every stop, which means you're learning the ecology and behavior of what you see, not just checking off names. The activity runs about five hours total. You get private transportation, entry to the WMA, snacks and both still and sparkling water, and a checklist of every species spotted during your tour.

What’s included

  • Private transportation.

What bird species might I see on a Central Florida birding tour?

Species highlights include Florida Scrub-jay, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Bachman's Sparrow, Crested Caracara, Limpkin, Snail Kite, Swallow-tailed Kite, Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Purple Gallinule, and Painted Bunting. The exact species depend on the season and which areas the guide takes you through.

How does the guide adjust the tour for photographers versus birders who want to see as many species as possible?
